Iris Apfel: ‘The fashion industry doesn’t just forget old people, it forgets middle-aged people’
Iris Apfel became a fashion icon and cover star at the age of 83, when the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute presented an exhibition about the New Yorker’s vast collection of clothes and accessories.
The 94-year-old has since starred in Kate Spade campaigns alongside Karlie Kloss and Tavi Gevinson, a documentary about her life, Iris, and collaborated with a number of major brands, including & Other Stories, MAC Cosmetics and most recently wearable tech company WiseWear. She started her fashion career after retirement age, but she’s the first to call out the fashion industry for being youth obsessed, and ignoring those with spending power.
