Iconic on so many levels.

InStyle: At last night’s Vanity Fair Oscars after-party, Sydney Sweeney looked every inch the glamorous, timeless movie star. At a glance, you would be forgiven for thinking you were looking at a snap of a star from Hollywood’s Golden Age. As it turns out, her dress was packed full of references to iconic moments in fashion history — not only is the dress a nod to the sultry looks of Marilyn Monroe but it’s also been worn by Angelina Jolie.

The white satin Marc Bouwer dress screamed old Hollywood elegance with its soft halter neck, deep v-neck cut, and draped skirt.

Back in 2004, Jolie wore the very same dress to the Oscars. Now, two decades later, Sweeney and her stylist have pulled the dress out of the archives to give it a new outing. “Sydney x archival @marcbouwer originally worn by Angelina Jolie to the Academy Awards in 2004,” Dickson wrote on Instagram about the look. “Thank you so much Marc + @paulmargolin for letting us into your archives for this special moment!”

Dickson went on to explain that they had accessorized with a custom Messika diamond necklace.

Many also noted that Sweeney’s glam look channeled Marilyn Monroe. She also wore her hair in a chic cropped lob that recalled the classic 1950s actress.

For Sweeney, the classic, sophisticated look is a little different from some of her more daring, experimental looks of late. However, as Sweeney recently told People, she likes to switch up her style depending on the event she’s attending.

“I honestly just vibe with whatever event’s going on,” she said. “It’s always a little bit different. That’s the fun thing about all of this. It’s like playing dress-up. It’s boring to do the same thing over and over again.”

Well, we certainly can’t think of a better way to dress for the Oscars after-party than referencing an iconic look like this one.
