While Pre-Raphaelite curls—seen all over the red carpet at the Met Gala back in May—have been another popular hair trend this year, the French new wave look is more undone and effortless, with lots of texture, but with a brushed-out feel. “It feels sophisticated and more elevated than a classic, flat, beachy wave,” says Hayes. “Think looser, wispier, and grown out, but with a glossy finish.”

Longer hairstyles obviously lend themselves to this kind of look—as Dua and Priyanka prove—but if you’re not yet in possession of mermaid lengths (and aren’t willing to consider some stealthy hair extensions), you can still try the trend. “The French new wave works well across all lengths and textures—with longer hair, the waves tumble and look effortlessly outgrown, while with shorter, bob-length hair, the extra texture is really flattering,” Hayes explains. But whatever your hair length, a good cut is required—ask your hairstylist for shattered ends to help keep the style looking and feeling undone.

How to recreate the look at home? Start by creating some oomph at the roots by blasting a volumizing mist, like Sam McKnight’s Cool Girl Superlift, directly into roots to ensure your hair looks thick, full, and not too flat. After that, grab your straightener and ensure you “alternate the direction of each wave, so the hair is unstructured and soft.” Finish with a mist of hairspray.
