When singer and fashion icon Erykah Badu stepped onstage to perform and accept her Fashion Icon award, she did so in exaggerated knitwear, which commenters on social media were calling a BBL outfit.

The “booty suit” or “Full Figure Form,” as Badu dubbed it on her Instagram, was made in collaboration with designer and Central Saint Martins grad Myah Hasbany. The nude-tone suit with an oversize form drew comparisons to goddess and fertility sculptures, which Badu shared on her Instagram story. Still, some of the most common comments from users, besides “What is she wearing?,” were that the outfit was a commentary on the prevalence of plastic-surgery procedures like BBLs. One user commented, “BBHell.”
Hasbany met Badu when the artist came to their high school looking for dancers for a performance. Hasbany used the opportunity to show Badu their work, in particular their bulbous knit shapes exploring themes of gender and body dysmorphia, they told 10 magazine. Hasbany and Badu are longtime collaborators with Badu having worn several of their pieces at Paris Fashion Week and during performances. And Badu’s dedication to pushing the limits and wearing what she wants regardless of who gets it is, of course, what earned her the 2024 CFDA Fashion Icon award.
